The team of media criticism podcast Citations Needed is doing a live show at UnionDocs in Brooklyn! Join hosts Adam Johnson and Nima Shirazi for a discussion about how the media––both news and pop culture––influence the public and jury pools in favor of prosecutors and the police. From the CSI effect to racist media portrayals, by the time most “defendants” sit down in a courtroom, an entire propaganda apparatus has worked to disadvantage them and poison the perceptions of their “peers.”

Net proceeds from the event will go to Court Watch NYC.

Court Watch NYC, a New York-based collaborative project with VOCAL-NY, the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, and 5 Boro Defenders, collects real-time data of what is actually happening in courtrooms and captures the narratives not reflected in official accounts. We will discuss the media’s effect on their work and the broader movement to monitor and tear down the carceral state.

Citations Needed is a media criticism podcast, created and hosted by Adam Johnson and Nima Shirazi and produced by Florence Barrau-Adams.

Combining political commentary and media analysis with a heavy dose of skepticism, humor, and history, Citations Needed challenges propaganda and holds power to account. Nima and Adam call out and correct the media’s ubiquitous reliance on and regurgitation of false and destructive narratives, tropes and stereotypes.
