Essay Film Festival x Open City Documentary Festival

Open City Documentary Festival is thrilled to announce their partnership with The Essay Film Festival on two sessions: superb new films from Johann Lurf and Susana de Sousa Dias. Lurf’s screening will be on 3/29 and de Sousa Dias’ on 3/25.

★ (Johann Lurf)
A scintillating, brilliantly edited collage of shots of the night sky, lifted from 550 films from the beginning of cinema history right up to the present day. A mesmeric and intoxicating visual essay.

Luz Obscura (Susana de Sousa Dias)
A highly sensitive and beautifully-crafted film about the lives of political prisoners during Portugal’s Salazar dictatorship (1926-1974), and the devastating effects this repression had on their children.

The 2018 programme for the ever-brilliant Essay Film Festival is now browsable (and bookable) featuring, amongst great new essay films from around the world, a Manu Kaul focus, Nicole Vedrès’ Paris 1900, a Jef Cornelis symposium, and recent films by Vivienne Dick.
