During my walks around the neighborhood\, I started noticing a variety of these empty tree beds and began researching and documenting them\, reflecting on their strange beauty.” — In Absentia. \nArtists Katarina Jerinic & Lee Cannarozzo have been invited to intertwine their inquiries with their city-centered earth works that question and surface many of the same resonant mysteries that rhyme with the stories and surprises found in Hoyer’s photographs. \nJerinic will present excerpts from a site-specific project adopting-a-highway plot carved out between a BQE exit ramp and a congested Brooklyn street\, calling attention to the land itself and ways it is shaped by urban bureaucratic and natural forces\, passers-by\, and Jerinic’s own endless efforts to maintain it. \nWhile Cannarozzo will share his experiments transforming a selection of neglected public micro spaces into ephemeral works of Land Art with a temporary installation project called FLAX ESTATES in Chelsea. \nLastly\, when considering the provocations made in this collection of work\, we couldn’t help but conjure Gillian Waldo’s astonishing new short film from this past year\, Public Surfaces\, that explores the One Percent for Art program\, in which sculptures were placed in public schools in Baltimore City during the 1960s-1980s. \nWe’re quite happy to bring together a dialogue between Hoyer\, Jerinic\, Cannarozzo and Waldo led by one of our leading minds on our city environments\, the Editor-in-Chief at Urban Omnibus\, Mariana Mogilevich. While many nurture trees\, plant life\, and vegetation\, a significant number are neglected or abandoned — overlooked corners in a city that typically puts great value on space. Ubiquitous yet enigmatic\, they appear like gaps or voids in the city’s concrete landscape with questions about their nature and purpose. In 2023\, Alexa Hoyer meticulously mapped and documented these spaces in various states of dereliction in her neighborhood of Ridgewood\, Queens\, capturing a unique perspective on the distinctive topography of New York City. The exposed earth\, sometimes weathered and strewn with debris\, becomes a canvas for contemplation\, unveiling new layers of meaning within the material of our everyday environments. Part earthwork\, part self-assigned residency\, the project called attention to the land itself and ways it is shaped by urban bureaucratic and natural forces\, passers-by\, and Jerinic’s own endless efforts to maintain it. \nThe standard issue DOT sign and the labor required of all volunteers (which became a kind of performance for passers-by) were just a part of the project. Jerinic also staged subtle interventions on the site in the form of plants and signs\, a guided tour\, a workshop and a projected slide show for cars stuck in traffic featuring images of trash found on site. The earthworks consisted of abandoned sidewalk plots that were tilled\, amended\, and planted with flax (Linum Usitatissimum). Most of the flax crops planted in the seven Flax Estates never made it to maturity; destroyed by either pigeons\, dogs\, or city workers. The few plants that did make it to maturity were transformed into a single paper-based nonsite. She participated in LMCC’s Governors Island artist residency and was recently awarded the 2023 Queens Arts Fund (QAF) New Work Grant. Her photography has been published in Hyperallergic\, Vice\, Urban Omnibus\, DOMUS\, and Harper’s Magazine. In 2022 her project “Wegweiser” was published by Kenektid in Seoul\, Korea. Cannarozzo’s work has been exhibited in various cultural centers such as The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art\, The Burchfield Penney Art Center\, The Bemis Center for Contemporary Art\, and The Visual Studies Workshop. Also self- taught in psychology and architecture\, his most useful tools are doubt and contradiction. \nBorn 165 kilometers south of the US-Mexico border\, Dirdamal self-identifies as a gypsy and a nomad\, he lives in places with the understanding he will soon abandon them. He has lived for prolonged periods of his life in Arizona\, Bolivia\, the North of India\, the South of Mexico\, the North of Vietnam\, the West of Turkey\, the North of Albania and Rwanda. \nHe directs\, produces\, acts\, writes\, does camera and sound\, composes music\, edits\, and designs the sound for his own films. At 22 years old he grabbed a camera for the first time in his life and made his first accidental and feature length film that won him the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. He has made 4 feature films thus far and has worked as an editor on 4 feature films of other filmmakers. \nWe’re delighted to have him back to UnionDocs after sharing his feature Death In Arizona almost exactly 8 years ago to the date for this forthcoming program where he first introduced us to his dazzling pursuit of questioning through filmmaking.  We’re thrilled to bring him back and bring folks to this latest singular work. Featuring Djibril Diop Mambety’s Le Franc (1994) and Kaveh Nabatian’s Sin La Habana (2020) and Kite Zo A (2023)\, the filmmakers present narratives rooted in temporal realities and contexts\, revealing cycles as well as contemporary incarnations of the human experience. Each film reflects different aspects of the socio-economic and political struggles faced by millions around the world due to the ongoing legacies of colonial subjugation. A focus of music and dance is a thread that further connects these works\, setting the stage for a stimulating visual\, sonic and somatic experience for viewers. \nThe in person screening at UnionDocs will present Nabatian’s Sin La Habana. In Nabatian’s Sin La Habana\, the protagonist\, Leonardo\, the star ballet dancer in his prestigious dance company\, and his partner\, Sara\, a lawyer\, are trying to escape Havana by any means. Over six decades of U.S. sanctions have eroded Cuban national infrastructures and compelled the society to live under strenuous conditions of food instability and extremely limited prospects. Nabatian based each character on Orishas\, divine spirits derived from the Yoruba religion in West Africa and part of Afro-caribbean religions\, including Santeria in Cuba. When the couple’s initial plan to seek asylum while Leonardo is traveling on tour derails\, they decide that he will seduce Nasim\, a recently divorced Iranian-Canadian tourist\, emigrate with her and bring over Sara afterwards. Her most recent short sci-fi film “珊瑚 Eve\, Eve” (2022) has been showcased and nominated in various international film festivals. It won Best Short at Gabes Cinema Fen Tunisia and audience/Jury awards at Manassat Film Fest Egypt. Now\, she’s developing her first feature “Looking for Spiderman\,” backed by grants from A Kiss in the Desert\, Rawiyat film collective\, and Two Stories Production\, part of Studio Seen program. Featuring live dj-ing\, vj-ing\, and scenes from the upcoming film Live to DIY- an experimental document of an underground hardcore music community in New York City over the last decade plus. \nTRANSMITTING LIVE FROM BABYLON is a party/ screening (a screening party?) with live music\, sound artists and Dj’s\, and featuring a media performance by Art Jones using sampled archival and commercial footage\, texts and original digital video and animation accompanied by an experimental dub\, hip-hop and electronic noise mix. Working with digital and analog audio/video sources\, Jones will create an abstract narrative collage about three perennially popular topics: love\, war and money. \nThe screening will include a work-in-progress from the upcoming feature-length documentary  Live To DIY: about the NYC hardcore band Rebelmatic and the struggle to be a truly independent working musician in a political economy that promotes a myth of celebrity\, fame\, and ‘making it’. Also featuring short films and classic music videos by artists and filmmakers.\n \nRebelmatic will be in attendance and play live alongside Art Jones performance. Rebelmatic’s ability to connect with audiences across various genres and musical landscapes is truly remarkable. Their shared stages with an impressive array of artists\, spanning from punk rock to hip-hop and beyond\, showcase their versatility and wide-ranging appeal. They have performed alongside bands like Zulu\, Soul Glo\, End It\, and Weedeater\, as well as iconic figures such as Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello\, DMC of Run-D.M.C.\, Slick Rick\, H.R. of the Bad Brains\, Angelo Moore of Fishbone\, the GZA\, and Schoolly D\, among many other. \nMoreover\, Rebelmatic’s commitment to the DIY ethos is evident in their participation in a documentary about DIY culture in New York City for Dr. Martens during the pandemic. Jones’ films and audiovisual performances have been presented at the Museum of Modern Art\, London’s Tate Gallery\, Roulette Intermedium\, and numerous festivals\, museums\, bars\, galleries\, and living rooms. Jones works in a variety of genres\, including fiction\, documentary and music-related pieces.
