Each month\, we invite you to watch a film that demands deeper discussion. Think Saturday morning cartoons\, but instead it’s visionary documentary art from across the globe\, programmed by the brilliant Cíntia Gil! \nFor March\, we’re honored to present The Shards by Masha Chernaya\, a raw and intimate chronicle of personal loss and political rupture. Shot in the spring of 2022\, as Masha prepares to leave Russia—a homeland transforming before her eyes—the film unfolds as a series of unexpected farewells. Her mother’s passing\, a lover fleeing conscription\, and the unraveling of everything she once knew push her to document her world with a fixated urgency. As grief consumes her\, she turns to the underground scene\, where a generation of young Russians seek escape in music\, rebellion\, and fleeting connection. \nA kaleidoscope of moments\, The Shards captures both the filmmaker’s own crumbling sense of self as well as the spirit of the time she is living through. \nThere are two ways to join: \nIn-person: Visit our Ridgewood space! Grab a ticket to save your spot. UNDO Members can attend for free with their Member Coupon Code at checkout. \nOnline: Stream the event live from wherever you are—just sign up! \nFollowing our screening\, we’ll gather reflections\, questions\, and insights to create a longform podcast interview with Masha Chernaya — a collective exploration of the film’s themes and creative process. One\, an assassin operating under aliases for pro-slavery secessionists in 1865\, contrasts with the other\, an anti-colonial freedom fighter of the 1830s who resisted the U.S. government’s land theft and violence against Native people. Their stories converge posthumously in three vanished towns\, now marked only by brown historical markers. \nStructured as a travelogue\, the film weaves landscapes\, archival texts\, and abstracted voiceovers to explore themes of deception\, displacement\, and erasure. Names and places remain shrouded\, mirroring the loss of knowledge buried in village cemeteries\, forgotten side roads\, and moonlit swamps. Nomotopowell reflects on the fragility of memory\, the violence of history\, and the lingering ghosts of erased narratives. \nBrent will be in attendance for a conversation following the screening. As a filmmaker whose work spans decades\, Theo has continuously explored Queer identity\, Indigeneity\, sexuality\, madness\, and love\, offering deeply personal yet politically urgent reflections on lived experience. \nThis program offers a rare opportunity to view nine of Theo’s films\, tracing his evolving artistic and personal journey. Among them is Dreams of Sunlight Through Trees\, his most recent short film\, which intimately documents his transition over a year and nine months\, set against the backdrop of escalating anti-trans legislation. This livestream will be the final chance to see this film before it leaves our platform! \nThe films in this selection reveal his unwavering commitment to self-documentation\, from early reflections on gender and sexuality in Lessons in Baby Dyke Theory to speculative imaginings of a post-colonial future in Reclamation. Whether drawing from personal experience or envisioning alternate worlds\, Theo’s films resist fixed narratives\, instead embracing identity as fluid\, complex\, and shaped by lived reality. \nNote:\nThis is an online event\, you can join in from anywhere in the world!\nUNDO Members can tune in for free – simply sign up for the livestream below!\nIf you’re not a Member\, you can grab a ticket![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_hidden-lg vc_hidden-md vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs”][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_single_image image=”147742″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text] \nWatch the conversation between Presenter1\, Presenter2 and Presenter 3 on the UnionDocs’ Membership hub. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Watch” style=”outline-custom” outline_custom_color=”#ffffff” outline_custom_hover_background=”#adadcc” outline_custom_hover_text=”#0000cd” shape=”round” align=”center” css_animation=”bounceIn”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nBios \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”147967″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””] \nTheo Jean Cuthand was born in Regina\, Saskatchewan\, Canada in 1978\, and grew up in Saskatoon. Instigated by a dynamic duo we have been inspired by for a long time in the field of audio documentary\, Avery Trufelman and Sayre Quevedo. We are teaming up with them to bring audio lovers and practitioners a dedicated and regular space to connect around the craft\, celebrate past work\, and find inspiration together. \nOn a given Sunday each month\, we will invite a master of the form to share a bit of an inside look at their work and their journey. A dedicated host will guide us through some close listening—zooming in on selects to understand and examine special moments and tactics— with a goal to share new epiphanies and spark thought-provoking conversations. For March\, Avery will interview the brilliant BA Parker\, the Ambies Award-winning co-host of NPR’s Code Switch\, where she tells stories about race\, identity\, and culture—covering everything from the legacy of racial trauma in horror films to the myth of self-care. \nParker is a powerhouse in audio storytelling. Before joining Code Switch\, she was the co-host and lead producer of The Cut podcast with New York Magazine\, exploring the intersection of race\, pop culture\, and personal narratives. Her path in audio began with a production fellowship at This American Life\, leading to work with Invisibilia\, Heavyweight\, and Nancy. She has also guest-hosted NPR’s It’s Been a Minute. We can’t wait to hear more about Parker’s audio journey! \nFor this series\, we are partnering with the incredible folks at Hark Audio\, where mixtapes meet podcasts. Our interviewers will handpick some standout moments from across each guest’s body of work and create a custom ‘Harklist’ for you to listen to before the event and familiarize yourself with some of their most impactful output\, a kind of warm-up track\, helping to surface ideas before the conversation begins. \nOur playlist will be available HERE\, one week before the event. Peek back for it\, and grab your ticket today to add your voice to the mix![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_hidden-lg vc_hidden-md vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs”][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_single_image image=”147742″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text] \nWatch the conversation between Presenter1\, Presenter2 and Presenter 3 on the UnionDocs’ Membership hub. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Watch” style=”outline-custom” outline_custom_color=”#ffffff” outline_custom_hover_background=”#adadcc” outline_custom_hover_text=”#0000cd” shape=”round” align=”center” css_animation=”bounceIn”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nBios \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”154258″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]B.A. Parker is the Ambies Award winning co-host of NPR’s Code Switch\, reporting stories such on racial trauma in horror films\, honoring her ancestors\, and the myth behind self-care. SUMMARY:Surfacing: A Night of Live Cinema
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Doors 7:30p\nProgram 8:00p[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]UnionDocs\n352 Onderdonk Ave\nRidgewood\, NY[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_hidden-lg vc_hidden-md vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs”][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/FR9SMJn9xIg” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nWe’re delighted to invite you to an evening of live cinema that brings together four performative film works that explore the interplay of light\, sound\, and the physical act of projection itself. Through an alchemy of moving images\, overhead liquids\, dual projections\, and mirrors\, the artists embrace the unpredictable nature of film as a living\, evolving medium. From the shifting reflections of REDNOWWONDER to the elemental bodies in Elixir of Life\, each piece works within self-imposed constraints\, uncovering new forms through repetition\, phase shifting\, and improvisation. The push and pull between nature and human intervention plays out across the screen\, inviting us to question where control ends and spontaneity begins. \nFeaturing artists Genevieve HK\, Rachael Guma\, and Sarah Halpern—whose practices span film\, sound\, and live performance—this program is a testament to collaboration and experimentation. Guma and Halpern’s Invisible Scissors\, an experimental duo rooted in NYC’s underground film community\, brings together theremin\, effects\, electric guitar\, and voice\, channeling their ongoing creative partnership into sonic and visual improvisation. Meanwhile\, Genevieve HK and Guma\, working as A Clockface Orange\, craft mesmerizing liquid-light performances inspired by the ephemeral\, experiential ethos of Fluxus and 1960s expanded cinema. Whether capturing the vastness of a whale’s journey or the unseen forces shaping our daily experience\, these performances challenge the fixed frame of cinema\, embracing the act of projection as an ever-changing event. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nProgram \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nElixir of life by Genevieve HK\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Approx. 12min\, 2025\, overhead liquid light and video projection\, sound\, found glass[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Humans are some majority percentage of liquid – a solution of blood\, sweat\, tears\, and other bodily fluids\, plus whatever things we slather onto ourselves in an effort to retain life-giving moisture. REDNOWWONDER is a play between mirrors\, reflections\, and the elements that govern us all. \nBlue is for water\, cold\, refreshing\, still. \nPurple is for air\, clouds\, birds on window sills.  \nYellow is for flowers\, sunlight\, trees\, and earth.  \nRed is for fire\, metal\, flames\, rebirth.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nWhite Fang\, Black Tooth by Sarah Halpern \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Approx. 15min\, Double projection for 16mm and overhead projector[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]The title refers to the giant dog characters from the Soupy Sales show\, who only ever appear as huge arms\, with suggested bodies out of frame\, grunting\, gesticulating and sometimes throwing pie. This piece deals with the influence of the world outside of one’s immediate vista. What part of our daily experience might be considered ‘in’ or ‘out’ of frame? This performative piece integrates recorded images of nature in terms of wildness and domination\, with a physical performance with my hands in the room.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nW-w-A-a-V-v-E-e-S-s\nby Genevieve HK\, Rachael Guma & Sarah Halpern\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Approx. 15 min\, 2025\, 16mm dual-projection[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Dual-projection of whale watching filmed by Rachael Guma in Sheepshead Bay. Curated by Jenn Grossman\, who helms Women Innovating Sound Experience (WISE)\, an NYC-based curatorial platform highlighting women and non-binary artists working in experimental sound and media arts\, the series brings together boundary-pushing artists for an evening of deep listening and live performance. \nThis iteration features an incredible lineup of live performances by — \nPaloma Kop – Working across analog video synthesis\, electronic media\, and print\, Kop’s work is driven by an interest in feedback loops\, recursion\, and emergent structures. Their performances generate hypnotic visual and sonic landscapes shaped by live processing and self-organizing systems. \nMelissa F. Clarke – An interdisciplinary artist merging scientific data and generative processes\, Clarke’s work explores the intersection of nature and technology. Expect immersive audiovisual compositions that translate glacial landscapes\, underwater topographies\, and environmental data into spectral\, meditative experiences. \nÉMU (Maria Takeuchi) – A composer and audiovisual artist who crafts delicate sonic poems through handmade instruments\, organic textures\, and modular synthesis. Her performances merge natural materials—water\, dry leaves\, shells—with electronic processing\, creating atmospheric and tactile soundscapes. \nThe evening also features a video screening by the amazing Rachel Efruss\, a multimedia artist working at the intersection of digital and analog technologies\, Efruss’s visuals weave together organic patterns\, technological artifacts\, and human presence to create hypnotic\, layered compositions. \nCome through for this evening of sonic exploration that bridges tactile sound\, digital systems\, and immersive visuals! WISE: In Waves invites you to listen deeply\, engage curiously\, and experience sound as a space of possibility. She merges data and procedural techniques into immersive multimedia installations\, performances\, and printed works. In series such as Polar and Sila\, Clarke explores bathymetric and geophysical datasets\, studying glaciers and the underwater landscapes they have shaped. Using computer vision and generative algorithms\, she composites and extracts these datasets over time\, revealing otherworldly scenes and sounds that depict both deep time and speculative futures. Through her installations\, sound publications\, and performances\, Clarke seeks to reconnect collected data with its organic source\, incorporating glass as both a sculptural and resonant element. Her cross-disciplinary approach examines the intersection of nature and technology\, questioning how their convergence informs human experience\, scientific exploration\, and systems of knowledge. Clarke has been an artist-in-residence at The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon\, New Inc\, Clock Tower at Pioneer Works\, Works on Water\, Sanctuary Cities\, Visible Future Labs\, and Simon’s Center for Geometry and Physics. She has exhibited and performed at venues including the Center for New Music in San Francisco\, Federal Hall\, Knockdown Center\, Pioneer Works\, Eyebeam\, Issue Project Room\, and the Parrish Museum. Her work has been featured in The Wire\, A Closer Listen\, Art F City\, Creators Project\, L Magazine\, Art in America\, and Impose Magazine. Clarke holds a master’s degree from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) and has taught interactive art\, computational art\, web art\, and physical computing as a lecturer at SUNY Stony Brook and NYU IDM. She currently teaches art and technology at NYU Steinhardt’s Curatorial Program.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”154735″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]ÉMU aka Maria Takeuchi\, is a multi-instrumental composer and audiovisual artist based in Brooklyn\, originally from a small town in Japan. She is a composer and audiovisual artist who creates sonic and visual poems\, merging organismic soundscapes with generative art and illuminating objects inspired by nature. Maria plays and conducts the sound objects with a delicate yet intentional focus. The subtle sound textures created by water\, dry leaves\, and shells on the handmade primitive instruments\, processed with modular synthesizers for added aesthetic atmosphere. ÉMU frequently collaborates with insomniac hotel since 2021 as MA to explore sound art\, installations\, and audiovisual performances. The duo has performed at Ars Electronica x NKB\, Pleamar Festival\, sublime frequencies\, and SIGNAL. Maria created visual programming for Petal Mori\, illuminating Yuri Shimojo’s art piece with 108 Petri dishes with Sakura petals made of torn washi paper placed on the salt mound for her exhibition Memento Mori at Praise Shadows Art Gallery in 2021. ENN (2023) is an interactive dome installation; the bio-inspired texture and motion-tracked particles of the audience were projected\, along with the spatialized composition for 157 speakers at the Satosphere dome as a result of the SAT artist residency. Maria developed the motion tracking piece to the theatrical piece membrane | 虚実皮膜 (kyojitsu himaku) in 2024 at Mabou Mines SUITE/Space 2023-24 collaborated with Yoko Murakami.
