The optical printer is an amalgam of 16mm camera and projector, used for re-photographing existing footage one frame at a time, allowing experimentation with the film image in basic ways (cropping, slowing down, speeding up, freeze frame) to more advanced techniques and effects (blowing up from super-8, strobe effects, mirrored images, matte shots and split screens, posterized images with color filters, wipes, and traveling mattes). We will explore the techniques of optical printing through hands-on experiments shot on 16mm and viewed in the screening room at the start the subsequent session. The workshop will include viewing pertinent works from The Film-Makers’ Cooperative’s collection, projected on 16mm film. The workshop will also cover programming the optical printer sequencer, shooting cinex tests, the use of frame handles in printing, various types of intermediate printing elements.
