Last weekend, we had a fantastic start to our new program, the Union Docs Collaborative (UDC). There was an invigorating energy, as this was the first time that all 12 participants were in a room together. Everyone shared short 3 minute segments of previous work. This turned into a remarkable hour long montage of radically different documentary approaches, exactly the type of interdisciplinary experimentation and cross-pollination we’re hoping to foster. The backgrounds of these emerging media-makers traverse experimental 16mm film, online video diaries, documentary radio, social justice, sound art, photography, interactive documentary, home movies, performance, found footage and more. Now, everyone has embarked on the UDC’s first project, a month-long mini collaborative documentary project inspired by the history of the city symphony genre. Stay tuned.
