“A remarkable cine-essay.” — The Hollywood Reporter “A must see show… extraordinary.” – The Observer “A profound meditation… audaciously, brilliantly pulled off.” – Independent “A remarkable release of emotion.” – NOW Magazine “A mind-blowing meditation on media’s influence and inheritance.” – HotDocs “Consuming, compelling, hypnotic.” – Stage “Touching, funny, linguistically thrilling.” – Exeunt Magazine
Join us on Friday or Saturday for STAND BY FOR TAPE BACK-UP, an unforgettable performance / film about memory, madness, and media by Scottish poet and filmmaker, Ross Sutherland. In the show, a VHS tape holding fragments of classic movies and early 90s television dubbed by Sutherland’s grandfather is played, rewound, replayed and fast-forwarded. Iconic images and scenes from popular culture such as Ghostbusters, The Wizard of Oz, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are synchronized with and transformed by the artist’s speech and action. Sutherland elevates these unintentionally collected and compiled video traces with his elegant writing and wit, developing a form that modulates between personal memoir, performative essay, and live remix. UnionDocs is thrilled to host the NYC premiere of this work after sold-out runs in London (and across the UK) and consistent rave reviews. Filmmaker, animator, and musician, Brent Green joins Sutherland in a discussion after the Saturday evening show. Reserve now, as tickets are going fast! - Skylight Pictures, WITNESS and UnionDocs are launching BK@24FPS – Human Rights Through a Different Lens, a monthly documentary series meant to expand dialogue around the intersection of human rights and art. The program starts next Wednesday with Haskell Wexler’s THE BUS (1963) a film that helped shape the direction of documentary cinema but has not been screened publicly in 30 years. Pamela Yates will lead a discussion with directors Haskell Wexler (via Skype) and Shabaah Jordan considering this landmark production the context of today’s social movements, such as #BlackLivesMatter. - If you are a filmmaker looking to support your artistic practice with lucrative freelance projects, or a small company looking to more effectively collaborate with brands, agencies and clients, join us this October for BRANDED DOCUMENTARIES. Led by Brian Newman of Sub-Genre, with guest instructors Kenyatta Cheese, Adam Katz and Karol Martesko-Fenster. Early registration deadline October 13. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
