The BDC is excited to collaborate with the legendary Puerto Rican social club Toñita’s as part of the Festival’s expansion. We’ll feature screenings of the award-winning documentaries “Los Sures” and “Toñita’s”. \n“Los Sures”: Diego Echeverria’s film portrays the Southside community’s struggles with poverty\, drugs\, gang violence\, crime\, racial tension\, and inadequate resources. It also celebrates the resilience and culture of the largely Puerto Rican and Dominican residents. \n“Toñita’s”: Is a documentary portrait of the last Puerto Rican social club in South Williamsburg\, Brooklyn\, featuring its regulars and the beloved community matriarch Maria Toñita. Produced by UnionDocs Collaborative Studio. \nMarking 50 years as a beloved community anchor\, Toñita’ Caribbean Social Club stands as the last of its kind in Williamsburg’s Southside\, a neighborhood almost entirely transformed.
