We follow Afro-Latina filmmaker Rebeca Huntt\, the titular Beba\, as she takes us on the journey through her experience growing up as “the poorest people on the Upper West Side.” As we watch Beba mature\, we experience all the disparate experiences that make up her personhood\, from General Trujillo’s ethnic cleansing of father’s homeland of the Dominican Republic to the ivy-marked walls of white privilege at Bard College. Throughout it all\, Beba remains at the center\, struggling to reckon with the world around her and find her place in it. \nBeba\, like its heroine and filmmaker\, defies genre and categorization\, pivoting from experimental art house film to brutally raw documentary within a frame. It’s at once a quintessentially New York story—that of the first generation immigrant family in search of the American Dream—and completely singular\, casting an unflinching yet artistic eye at one woman’s journey as she reckons with historical\, societal\, and intergenerational trauma. Nominated for the Crystal Bear at the Berlin Film Festival\, Beba proves that the more specific a story we tell\, the more universal an experience we share. \n– Chris Murphy[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_text_separator title=”79 min” color=”white” el_class=”h1″][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”141127″ img_size=”200 x 200″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Rebeca Huntt is an Afro-Latina Writer/Director born and raised in New York City. This plot of land has been in my family since the 1860s when it was purchased by my ancestors after emancipation. The Hopswee plantation\, where they were once enslaved still stands a mile away\, now a wedding destination.  The land presents unanswered questions about ownership\, belonging\, citizenship\, and history. Its transformation from marsh to the mainline of American rice and wealth was predicated on the skilled labor and ingenuity of Africans\, primarily from the rice coast of western Africa. The fields were abandoned after Emancipation when the formerly enslaved left for other trades. The land’s potential still exists. One day I will inherit this land. And I will inherit all of this history and presence that comes with it. \n–Jon-Sesrie Goff[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_text_separator title=”91 min” color=”white” el_class=”h1″][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”141131″ img_size=”200 x 200″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \n\nJon-Sesrie Goff is a multidisciplinary artist\, curator\, and arts administrator. While serving two life sentences for first-degree murder in Pelican Bay State Prison\, Sansón grapples with the ways he has traversed these borders\, moving from country to country\, from rural California to solitary confinement\, and from the truths of his life to the mythologies he’s created. A tale told through dramatic reenactments\, Sansón and Me recreates a life of multilayered border crossing as told by Sansón to his interpreter-turned-friend\, filmmaker Rodrigo Reyes. Told through the lens of Muslims living in the United States\, the film offers a counter-narrative of pivotal moments in U.S. history and explores the impact of anti-Muslim rhetoric and policy on young Muslims who came of age after 9/11. Due to their first-hand knowledge and intimate access to the Muslim community\, the filmmaking team is able to take charge of the account\, which has previously been shaped by outsiders. \nABER’s father was deported when she was 16. After the inconclusive death of his young niece\, filmmaker Angelo Madsen Minax returns to his rural Michigan hometown determined to make a film about the family’s wrongful persecution. But soon the scope of his project expands and he finds himself investigating the depths of generational addiction\, Christian fervor\, and trans embodiment. Like the relentless Michigan seasons\, the meaning of family shifts\, as Madsen\, his sister\, and his parents strive tirelessly to accept one other. \nUsing home movie footage and present day interviews to chart their story\, the filmmaker traces the fine line between the truths and fictions that exist in every family. Turning the camera towards himself\, Madsen confronts his own relationship with masculinity and his interrogation of what it means to be a good brother. The result is a deeply personal tour de force; a thoughtful\, provocative rumination on identity and familial responsibility. North By Current turns an unflinching eye toward a family in the process of repair. ” \n-Lucy Mukerjee[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_text_separator title=”85 min” color=”white” el_class=”h1″][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”118824″ img_size=”200 x 200″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Angelo Madsen Minax is a multi-disciplinary artist. Kingdon’s rich and unobtrusive access into these arenas captures revealing moments with impressive patience and restraint—but also with surprising moments of humor. The film’s curious and observational lens delivers a hypnotic quality in its visuals\, immersing the viewer in the stark differences between social classes\, and how the struggles of the working class are laid bare in trying to realize the “Chinese Dream.” Implementing a large-scale visual canvas\, Kingdon scrutinizes China’s imposing standing as a global superpower and embeds the viewer in the work ethic and lifestyle of its citizens—showcasing their collective pursuit of success through hard labor and material wealth.” \n—Jose Rodriguez[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_text_separator title=”97 min” color=”white” el_class=”h1″][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”116943″ img_size=”200 x 200″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Jessica Kingdon directed Commodity City and Routine Island\, and co-directed It’s Coming!. The activists raised the Puerto Rican flag atop the building\, and hung a banner reading “The People’s Hospital”—a nom de guerre still used today. \nThrough archival footage\, seamless reenactments\, and modern-day interviews\, we tell the story of the Young Lords’ resistance against institutions curated by wealth and white supremacy\, and their fight for the most basic of human rights: the right to accessible\, quality healthcare. The Young Lords’ bold act of civil disobedience resulted in no loss of life and the Patient’s Bill of Rights\, though watered down is still in use today.”[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_text_separator title=”37 min” color=”white” el_class=”h1″][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”113827″ img_size=”200 x 200″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Emma Francis-Snyder is a New York-based activist\, documentary filmmaker\, and archivist.
