The Hampshire College Creative Media Institute brings visiting artists like Ken Burns, Ivy Meeropol, Robert Greene and others to lead Screening Seminars and Creative Labs. We bring students and professionals together with creative pioneers who will conduct screening seminars, lead workshops, and mentor participants.
The 2014 CMI will focus entirely on Nonfiction Media Buy . The CMI is for makers, students, educators, and lovers of traditional and non-traditional cinema, video, and new media. Non-students can attend to any single or multiple weeks, students can attend all four weeks for college credit (4 credits).
The 4-week program immerses participants in deep study during the Seminars and provides space for reflection, experimentation, and an opportunity to gain new skills during the Creative Labs.
The dates are July 13-Aug 9 and each week is a stand-alone program, either a screening seminar or lab. Here’s the most updated schedule:
July 13-19 (seminar)
Robert Greene curates Cinematic Nonfiction seminar. Jason Tippet, Margaret Brown, David Hoffman, the Roos Brothers, and Fred Wiseman (skype) will visit.
July 20-26 (lab)
Ivy Meeropol leads a lab dedicated to giving feedback on works-in-progress. Meghan O’Hara leads our undergrad curriculum which has students pull a name from a hat, then document that subject (person or place in the surrounding areas) all week
July 27-Aug 2 (seminar)
Charlotte Cook curates The Active Camera seminar. Ken Burns, AJ Schnack, Rob Epstein, Laura Poitras (skype), the Pennebakers (skype) and others will visit.
August 3-9 (lab)
Brett Morgen leads a lab dedicated to feedback on rough cuts. Meghan O’Hara leads undergrads through editing the footage they shot during week two.

The Purchase Pills Pills Creative Media Institute is inspired by workshops that existed in the early days of Hampshire College. In the 1970s and 80s founding faculty members Jerome Liebling, Elaine Mayes, and others brought together legendary artists working in film, photography, and later video to teach, share works, and to aid one another in expanding the reach of their mediums. John Marshall, Jean Rouch, Richard Leacock, Jonas Mekas, Helen Levitt, Hollis Frampton, DA Pennebaker, Ann McIntosh, Diane Arbus, and others all spent multiple summers at Hampshire.
