Collaborative research for new practices in documentary art.

Application part two: The Research Proposal

You should only fill this out if you received an invitation to apply with a partner. Thank you!

We now invite you to develop a research proposal together for the second and final part of The UNDO FELLOWSHIP application.

The writer is ultimately responsible for crafting this language and submitting the proposal, but we encourage you both to take time to engage in an intentional and open exchange to make sure that the research proposed will advance both of your interests, aligns with the fellowship goals, and is sufficiently rooted in the artists’ practice and work.

We only require about 3,500 characters max. or around 500 words and some ideas towards your ideal reader. Please be in touch with any questions.

The Research Proposal must be completed and submitted by July 9, 2024.

Application

  • Please explain the central question that will motivate the exchange, research, and writing for the fellowship. How does this inquiry root in the artist’s film practice, and in what other contexts might it apply? How can the resulting exploration offer resources for the further development of the artist's projects, aesthetics, and methodologies? In what ways does this inquiry expand our understanding of radical forms of filmmaking and offer new languages of documentary cinema? What references and connections might be forged through this study to work by other artists, both past and current ? What is the relevance of your proposal to contemporary struggles and progressive social movements?
  • Please share your early ideas for the small online and print publication, which is meant to be the primary outcome of the research process. Who you might approach to join you in this research and for what projects might they be commissioned? These contributors and topics do not need to be confirmed, but let us know your reasoning for engaging them. The target for the reader is a collection of at least 4 works of writing and 1 interview or panel transcript (or comparable explorations of the topic, such as a podcast episode or video essay) with a publishing deadline at the end of 2025. The commissioning budget is $5000. That said, the form of this final publication is not confined, and we encourage ideas regarding different possibilities for contributions.
  • You confirm your in-person presence at: 1) the Public Seminar at DocLisboa in Lisbon, Portugal | October 17-22, 2024; 2) the Final Public Symposium with presentations, screenings and panel discussions in October, 2025, at EMPAC in Troy, New York.

You confirm remote participation in: 1) publishing informal entries at least once each month in an open notebook, 2) The requirements of the commission, 3) Editorial and design meetings as needed
  • This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
