UnionDocs is delighted to be a presentation partner for the screenings. The screening will take place on JUNE 14 at 5:45PM at Village East. We follow Afro-Latina filmmaker Rebeca Huntt\, the titular Beba\, as she takes us on the journey through her experience growing up as “the poorest people on the Upper West Side.” As we watch Beba mature\, we experience all the disparate experiences that make up her personhood\, from General Trujillo’s ethnic cleansing of father’s homeland of the Dominican Republic to the ivy-marked walls of white privilege at Bard College. Throughout it all\, Beba remains at the center\, struggling to reckon with the world around her and find her place in it. \nBeba\, like its heroine and filmmaker\, defies genre and categorization\, pivoting from experimental art house film to brutally raw documentary within a frame. It’s at once a quintessentially New York story—that of the first generation immigrant family in search of the American Dream—and completely singular\, casting an unflinching yet artistic eye at one woman’s journey as she reckons with historical\, societal\, and intergenerational trauma. She wrote and directed her first feature-length film\, BEBA\, which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and will be released by NEON in 2022. She premiered her short film “1-800 Lovable” at the 2020 BlackStar Film Festival\, and has also screened at Oaxaca Film Festival\, The Tide Film Festival\, Athena Film Festival\, Art of Brooklyn Film Festival\, and The Fader Magazine. Rebeca was recently included in DOC NYC’s 40 under 40 list and was a participant in The Gotham Documentary Lab. Rebeca is currently repped by UTA[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This plot of land has been in my family since the 1860s when it was purchased by my ancestors after emancipation. The Hopswee plantation\, where they were once enslaved still stands a mile away\, now a wedding destination.  The land presents unanswered questions about ownership\, belonging\, citizenship\, and history. Its transformation from marsh to the mainline of American rice and wealth was predicated on the skilled labor and ingenuity of Africans\, primarily from the rice coast of western Africa. The fields were abandoned after Emancipation when the formerly enslaved left for other trades. The land’s potential still exists. One day I will inherit this land. He is in production for his feature-length documentary\, After Sherman. He studied sociology\, economics\, and theater at Morehouse College (Atlanta\, GA)\, completed his BA at The New School (New York\, NY)\, along with an MFA from Duke University (Durham\, NC) in Experimental and Documentary Arts.
