Narcisa Hirsch: Graffiti, Film & Political Gesture
With Jessica Sarah Rinland
UnionDocs
352 Onderdonk Ave
Ridgewood, NY
We’re delighted to welcome filmmaker and artist Jessica Sarah Rinland back to UnionDocs for a special evening of performance, reading, and moving images exploring the work of pioneering Argentine experimental filmmaker and artist Narcisa Hirsch.
The evening emerges from Rinland’s ongoing work on a book centered on Hirsch’s graffiti made during Argentina’s 1976–83 military dictatorship. The project considers graffiti as a political and artistic gesture, and as one part of Hirsch’s expansive practice across film, performance, photography, and public intervention.
For this program, Rinland will present a performance and reading from her developing research alongside a selection of Hirsch’s films, opening up connections between her moving-image work and the gestures, inscriptions, and interventions she made beyond the screen. Together, the works offer a way into Hirsch’s singular practice while tracing a broader history of political graffiti and the possibilities of making images and marks under conditions of repression.
Filmmaker and artist Julián d´Angiolillo will be in conversation with Jessica. Join us for an evening moving across cinema, performance, writing, and the street, and for a close encounter with an extraordinary body of work through Rinland’s ongoing research. Come through!

Bios

Jessica Sarah Rinland is an Argentine-British artist filmmaker whose work explores and interrogates archives and institutions, the tactile labour that occurs within them, their replicas and representations, the scientific world whose knowledge informs them, and how that knowledge is constructed, complicated, and disseminated. She works primarily in film as well as in installation, photography, sculpture, and artists books.
She is a recipient of numerous prizes including Special Mention at Locarno and San Sebastian Film Festival, Best Film at DocumentaMadrid, Primer Premio at Bienale de Imagen en Movimiento Buenos Aires, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Schnitzer prize for excellence in the arts. Rinland’s work has been exhibited internationally in solo exhibitions including Alma Pearl, Tabakalera, University of Tennessee Downtown Gallery, and group shows at Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Taipei Biennial, Somerset House, and New Contemporaries.
She has had retrospectives of her films at Flaherty Film Seminar, Anthology Film Archives, Open City Documentary Festival, Doc’s Kingdom. Residencies include DAAD, Camargo Foundation, Film Studies Center at Harvard University, Somerset House Studios, MacDowell, and Ikusmira Berriak. Her films are held in the British Film Institute and MoMA.

Julián d’Angiolillo (Argentina) holds a degree in Visual Arts from the “P. Pueyrredón” National School of Fine Arts (UNA) and studied at the School of Dramaturgy (EAD) in Buenos Aires. His work gives form to diverse records—including recordings, photographs, installations, and documentary films—that capture habits within specific physical territories. Amidst the institutionalization of lived experiences into efficient, categorized frameworks, his work seeks to identify intervals, exceptions, anomalies, and experiences on the verge of extinction. He has directed the feature films La gruta continua, Cuerpo de letra, and Hacerme feriante, as well as the short films Condominio, Suite Matanzas, and Autosocorro. His site-specific works include the video installations Direção de passeios at the Buenos Aires Botanical Garden, Informe del aire at Móvil, La remPlaza for the Performance Biennial, and Antrópolis at Tecnópolis, as well as the recent collaborative work Geonnitus.
