FENDA – Experimental Festival of Film Arts – is an international encounter dedicated to experimental film arts, in a broad sense. FENDA is interested in experimental and avant-garde audiovisual work in a broad sense. We can adopt a definition made by experimental pioneer Germaine Dulac in 1932: “any film whose technique, used for a renewed expressiveness of image and sound, breaks with established traditions to search out, in the strictly visual and auditory domain, new emotional chords”. We want works that other people might consider “too weird”, “too small”, or “too difficult”. We specially want those works that might raise the question: “Is this cinema?”. We use the expression “film arts” on purpose, because we want to expand traditional conceptions of what is cinema. We are not interested in films that function inside the conventions of traditional genres or formats, be it documentary or fiction. We are interested in artworks that are restlessly seeking for new ways of expression through image and sound.
The second edition of the festival will take place from June 7 to 11, 2023, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The call for submissions is now open from January 3 to 31, 2023. To submit your work, please access filmfreeway.com/fendafestival.
