Brown Girls Doc Mafia (BGDM) is raising $400k on GoFundMe August 3-31! Raised funds will help keep their programs running through 2021 and will allow BGDM to finally leap into grantmaking.
WHY NOW
COVID-19 has put the documentary field grantmaking at risk with a handful of funders shuttering their programs. And in light of the film industry’s increased interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion in response to the international Movement for Black Lives, BGDM has a unique opportunity to catalyze this moment into deeper organizational sustainability, and to expand our ability to support our members financially.
Our community has written articles to shed light. Some articles include:
Filmmaker Magazine: The Imperative to Hire Black and POC Filmmakers within the Documentary Community: A Conversation with Brown Girls Doc Mafia Founder Iyabo Boyd
Hyperallergic: We Need Documentarians of Color to Tell Their Own Stories
