Part-time Visual Arts Teaching Artist – In-School (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

El Puente is looking for an individual who is open-minded, patient, loves to educate and learn, and works well with young people at the middle school level for the position of visual arts facilitator in the Integrated Arts Project and Extended Learning time at MS 50.

MS 50 El Puente Community School is a model for how school transformation can be made with the support and guidance of students, families, educators and the surrounding community. They are currently in the second year of their transformation to a full-scale community school. A community school seeks to support students socially, emotionally, physically and academically and utilizes resources creatively to be able to meet the needs and interests of students, families and communities. Instead of top-down decision making, MS 50 El Puente Community School is challenging previous school reform models by demonstrating that involving multiple stakeholders in the decision making process creates better results for longterm change. Two key areas of this work are “Integrated Arts Project” and “Extended Learning Time.”

El Puente Integrated Arts Project (IAP) is an in-school, arts-based program that engages students in a dynamic, in-depth learning process that around a central theme, vision, or community issue. The IAP is facilitated by a team of academic teachers, teaching artists, administrators, and students. Together, they develop a central theme from which teachers and artists develop integrated lesson plans focused sequentially developed skill-building activities, 1-on-1 mentoring and community-driven projects that are aligned with New York State and City learning standards for the arts and Common Core learning standards. The IAP is part of El Puente, a community organization founded in 1982 that conducts education, advocacy, community organizing and health & wellness activities for the North Brooklyn community. Extended Learning Time (ELT) at MS 50 El Puente Community School is the last hour of instruction from 3-4 pm. During this time, students are involved in a variety of classes that they have chosen based on their interests and future goals. Visual Arts Teaching Artist will be responsible for two classes: Mural Making (M,W,F) and Introduction to Visual Arts (T, Th). An hour of planning and prep will be allotted for each instructional hour.

SALARY & WORK HOURS:

* $25/hour; 14 hours/week during the school day (includes planning and set-up time), through June 2016 (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 2-4pm & Wednesday 9am-4pm)

RESPONSIBILITIES

IAP: * Develop visual arts curriculum and daily lesson plans that align to academic curriculum * Collaborate and plan with partner academic teacher on a weekly basis * Facilitate arts-based lessons that focus on foundations/techniques of visual arts (drawing, painting, sculpting, collage, printmaking, mural arts, etc.) AND that integrate academic themes and social issues * Coordinate exhibition pieces for June IAP showcase, and/or seasonal, theme-based events * Attend regular staff and supervision meetings & participate in staff development *Collaborate with other IAP teaching artists and academic teachers in IAP Design Team

ELT: *Create a safe space for students to learn art; free of bullying and full of encouragement. *Plan and execute daily lessons aligned with NYS arts standards *Help students develop leadership skills *Review work from previous sessions and organize portfolios *Display students’ artwork around the school *Plan for one art event in the spring where families will be invited to view their children’s work. *Choose one core value and reinforce it through the class throughout the semester. It can be Peace & Justice, Respect, Innovation, Determination or Empathy. *Communicate with families about their child’s progress *Create, translate, disseminate and collect permission slips as needed for arts-related field trips outside school hours or regular school days. *Provide grades (P/F) for 3rd and 4th marking period for each student in visual arts roster.

REQUIREMENTS: * Must have 2-3 years of experience teaching the foundations of visual arts/fine arts to young people ages 11-14 in a school, after-school, camp or other youth setting. * Must be open to design and implement creative curricula * Must work well young people and have a desire to be part of a social movement for peace and justice * Must have previous experience in designing diverse arts curriculum, and be willing to work to creatively incorporate El Puente’s mission in their curriculum * Must work well with young people and have a desire to be part of a social movement for peace and justice. * Must have a B.A., B.F.A, or Equivalent Experience *Prior experience working with a classroom teacher in an Arts-In-Education setting is a plus

WLC is dedicated to the growth and empowerment of young people and their community. The Center’s activities focus on the integration of a human rights consciousness and artistic development that allows its members to experience their creative potential while learning about social responsibility. Activities include, but are not limited to, spoken word, dance, theater and art, as well as academic support, leadership development, and community engagement. DESCRIPTION:
WLC is looking for an individual who is open-minded, patient, loves to educate and learn, work well with young people at the high school level for the position of visual arts facilitator at our after school-leadership program in Williamsburg.
SALARY & WORK HOURS:
* $20/hour; 10 hours/week during the hours of 3pm-8pm, Monday-Thursday (through June 2016; hours will shift during summer programming)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Teach foundations/techniques of fine arts (drawing, painting, sculpting, collage, printmaking, mural arts) and arts & crafts
* Design curricula that integrates arts/crafts techniques and theme-based projects with seasonal or event-related themes
* Support young people with their high school and college art portfolios
* Mentor youth on a one-on-one basis
* Coordinate exhibition pieces for end of the year showcase, and/or seasonal, theme-based events
* Attend regular staff and supervision meetings & participate in staff development
* Keep accurate records of youth attendance
* Be responsible for participant recruitment and retention activities
* Work with other staff to mentor and support youth, as well as to create a safe, supervised, and welcoming environment

* Collaborate with other artists and facilitators within and across El Puente programs on community projects or participate in larger El Puente events
