I CALL MYSELF DESIRE WITH FAST WINGS

With Narimane Mari

Join us for a conversation and night of ‘spiritual scouting’ with filmmaker / artist Narimane Mari! She is currently in production on her next film that focuses on desire and sex. This new film is about “exploring the phantasmagoric imagination of desire and its simple and crude sexual materiality. Not as an answer to moral or social order, but as an innocent vital necessity.”

She proposes a night of sharing and conversation below and encourages the audience to come prepared to participate, vocally or as active listeners and perhaps to continue the collaboration onwards after this evening! Filmmaker Pawel Wojtasik will assist her during the evening as a “devil’s advocate.”

“I propose to all those who want to be there on the 29th, to come simply to listen, to share, or to tell the freedom they have managed to take or the one they would like to take on the hygienist dictatorship of our most battered emotion. If they wish they can bring their own images, words, silences, music, references or personal creations. And from these “gifts”, which we shall not question, I will work, the following months, to propose a film world, a visual creation of desires, which will express themselves in a social space, because it seems necessary to impose these free desires on the Society. Also, I will open to those who want it, the possibility of “playing” in the film. Ten or fifteen days at the end of summer 2018. Each development will be followed and shared downstream with the participants who wish.

The desire and the question of sexuality participate in all the creations and quests intrinsic to each individual regardless of the place of their expression. I work my films and this one even more, given its complexity and its extensiveness, considering all the “scriptures” as able to bring meaning, light and materiality to such a troubling emotion. At this point, I do not want to write the story, I do not want to determine its visual material, I do not want to impose a geographical environment and a physical transcription. It would make me act exactly as the society does on us: impose on the other a framework, in which ultimately, we will feel obliged to enter.”

We will explore examples in Cinema of what Narimane thinks is necessary to delve into the vital and poetic dimension of desire and sex and then join together with Pawel Wojtasik for a conversation following this work. In addition to her event at UnionDocs, she will be screening her new film ‘Le Fort des Fous‘ at the New York Film Festival as a part of Projections.
