Shame and Dignity

With Stanley Schtinter and Sukhdev Sandhu

Doors 7:30p
Program 8:00p

UnionDocs
352 Onderdonk Ave
Ridgewood, NY

Stanley Schtinter has been described as an ‘artist’ by the Daily Mail, as an ‘exorcist’ by the Daily Star. He founded the Liberated Film Club in which neither audiences nor film presenters (among them John Akomfrah, Laura Mulvey and Dennis Cooper) knew what the film to be screened was.

He runs the purge.xxx label, created a 96-hour-long video installation called The Lock-In which consisted solely of indoor pub footage from the British soap opera EastEnders, and has produced an audio series entitled ‘Important Books (or Manifestos Read by Children)’. His most recent project is Last Movies – a book and touring programme (premiering at Light Industry on November 4) – devoted to the final films watched by a medley of artists, criminals, politicians and boldface names across the 20th-century. Alan Moore has called it “Profound and riveting … a remarkable achievement.”

This evening, we have invited Schtinter for an informal sharing of his interlocking work and practice as a filmmaker, publisher, curator, record label boss, and peddler of what Prospect magazine recently called “delinquent, almost demented absurdism”.

We’re happy to share that the ever-brilliant and entertaining Sukhdev Sandhu, director of the Colloquium for Unpopular Culture, has agreed to join and steer the discussion towards the importance of deprofessionalisation, darkness and intensity, of duration and horrid laughter, of the low and the lonesome.

Come through for a surprising night of yarns and exploration with these two brilliant guests who we know will take us down some unexpected paths. You don’t want to miss it!

Watch the conversation between Presenter1, Presenter2 and Presenter 3 on the UnionDocs’ Membership hub.

Stanley Schtinter has been described by writer Iain Sinclair as ‘the last accredited activist, the last avant-garde,’ and as an ‘ethical conman’ by Sight and Sound magazine. His published writing includes The Liberated Film Club and Last Movies (Tenement Press). His moving image works are distributed by Light Cone.

Sukhdev Sandhu directs the Colloquium for Unpopular Culture at New York University.
