Financing Your Documentary

With Jenny Raskin, Stephanie Bleyer and Judith Helfand This session will address the eternal question: how to finance your doc? What are the pros and cons of different fundraising models (grants, equity investment, pre-sales, crowdsourcing)? Budgeting, how to find and successfully apply for grants, tips and tools for crowdfunding and other approaches to getting funded will be discussed in this can’t-miss session.

Planning Your Documentary

With producer Yael Melamede, Anne Kennedy McGuire and Penny Lane This session covers issues of legal rights and clearances, business basics for filmmakers, budgeting, structuring agreements for talent and crew, and more.

The Subway Series: Tunnel Stories and Spraymasters

With Geoff Duncanson and Manfred Kirchheimer, and Reid Bingham This is the third screening in Cinebeasts’ two month long Subway Series film festival. This screening will focus on the artists, taggers, and vandals, who make their mark underground in tunnels and on trains. It features the short film Tunnel Stories, followed by the featured documentary SprayMasters, and a few short subway-related surprises.

We are Winning, Don’t Forget: Jean-Gabriel Périot at the MoMA & North American Tour

With Jean-Gabriel Périot Jean-Gabriel Périot, born in France in 1974, has over the past fifteen years perfected an innovative filmmaking approach by focusing on archival editing. Despite the labor intensive process of compiling a film via multiple edited images, Périot has made numerous short films using digital video and/or film that reside within combined documentary/essay, animation, and experimental genres.

Empty Quarter with Alain LeTourneau and Pam Minty

With Alain LeTourneau and Pam Minty. Empty Quarter is a film about the region of Southeast Oregon, an area populated by ranching and farming communities, in Lake, Harney, and Malheur counties

With Holly Fisher and John Gianvito. Deafening Silence is a fusion of beauty and terror, observation and danger, roving visuals and intimate stories either funny, contemplative, or horrific – a subjective, layered depiction of Burma under brutal military dictatorship.

Day is Done with Christoph Terhechte

With Christoph Terhechte Day Is Done is a poetic but also wryly humorous study of the selfish artist trying to play the indifferent God, but ending up revealing himself as all too human. Day Is Done contains images of ravishing though unconventional urban beauty.

Teenager Hamlet and Auto Mechanic Ulysses

With Margaux Williamson and Tom McCormack. This double feature explores the distance between–and proximity of—the Western Canon and our own gonzo contemporary world, as well as just art and life.

Metropolitan Avenue with Christine Noschese

With Christine Noschese, Ida Susser and Jan Peterson Metropolitan Avenue touches on every problem that every urban neighborhood has either gone through or will face. It expresses a point of view, focusing on the women of the diverse ethnic communities. She documents, through interviews, their strength, individually and collectively, and their persistence.

The Last Clinic with Maisie Crow

With Maisie Crow and Alissa Quart. In Mississippi, a new law threatens to shut down the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the last abortion provider in the state. The Last Clinic captures the humanity behind an incendiary issue.

The Installation of the Real: A Panel Discussion on Documentary in the Gallery

With Niels Van Tomme, Elisabeth Subrin, Neil Goldberg, and Rebecca Cleman. This panel brings together a set of artists, filmmakers, curators, and critics to discuss the opportunities and challenges of bringing documentary work from the cinema into the gallery, and of floating between black box and white box exhibition spaces.
