About the Club

ARTISTIC DIFFERENCES, produced by UnionDocs and hosted by Cíntia Gil, is a monthly cineclub, an open brain trust of folks from all around the world, who gather regularly to thoughtfully consider challenging works of documentary art and generate brave questions and candid responses that fuel a community dialogue.

It is also a series of longform interviews with the most poetic and powerful filmmakers exploring documentary art today answering questions that are generated together in our regular community of club-goers.

Co-Programmer, Cíntia Gil

Born in Portugal, Cíntia Gil is a film programmer. She studied at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (Lisbon Theatre and Film School) and holds a degree in Philosophy from the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto (Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Porto), where she has also taught seminars on aesthetics. She directed DocLisboa Film Festival from 2012-2019 and Sheffield Doc Fest from 2019-2021.

UnionDocs Center for Documentary Art

UnionDocs is a Center for Documentary Art that presents, produces, publishes, and educates. We lead a diverse community on a search for urgent expressions of the human experience, practical perspectives on the world today, and compelling visions for the future.

FAQs

We all know how the work that challenges us most is sometimes the most difficult to watch on your own; that was pretty much the impetus for starting our little cinema. Not only is it hard to locate physically, the motivation and mental energy required to watch can be tough to muster without a shared commitment of attention. That’s why we are organizing this social way of watching together with lots of resources to help us approach the relevant questions and meaningful insights that these films have to offer.

Everything can be accessed online — either on our livestreams or through a private link shared with you when you sign up each month. But if you are nearby we encourage you to attend screenings IRL on the ground at any partner screenings,  or live at UnionDocs.

Memberships have a 30 day trial so your first time participating is totally free. If you enjoy your experience, we ask you to pay $7/month for these programs next time in addition to the other perks and work available to UNDO members. It’s a pretty great deal!

Our group meetings are the first Saturday of the month at 1PM EST (check your time zone here).  We’ll kick off the livestream and in person screenings just before, and you can check the time depending on program length over on each month’s sign up page.

No need to prepare anything besides watching the film before the meeting time. If you haven’t received a link to join, check your spam or make sure you have filled out the registration for this month’s club meeting.

Come ready to listen in to some framing context, and provocations and then to speak and share your experience of the film(s), and think through the questions you would want to ask the filmmaker.

Yes, we ask you to register to attend for every session you want to be a part of as there will be specific communications to each month’s participants.

The conversation is just with the other members of the cineclub so we can have a generous open conversation where we process together. We’ll generate questions for the filmmaker that we then bring to the podcast interview!
