Sound Fields is a publication and community event series founded in 2023 that is dedicated to the art of audio documentary in theory and practice. We are a collective of audio documentarians interested in building community, defying convention and homogeneity, and in asserting for ourselves the ethical concerns, creative inheritances and common goals that fuel our wildest dreams for the future of our field.
Issue 2 is The Archives Issue — an attempt to reckon with the future of our field by engaging with the past. As we embark on our first print issue, we’re intrigued by ideas about how to make tangible the ephemera of sounds, of RSS feeds, of digital media. And we’re inviting our global network of fellow documentarians to consider: How does documentary audio intersect with the archive; and, How are we as audio documentarians archivists? Just like our first issue, you can expect essays and Q and As from some of the most groundbreaking audio documentarians working today. The pitch window for The Archives Issue is open until December 15, 2024. We’re taking pitches for Essays ($400 honorarium) and Q and As ($200 honorarium).
