I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole

presented with MIX NYC. Special guest Jeffrey Escoffier. In an era when anyone making, promoting, or appearing in what the US government considered “pornography” could be liable for prosecution and jail time, Wakefield Poole was a remarkably open and honest gay filmmaker.

Living Los Sures Launch at the 2014 NYFF Convergence

Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Filmmaker Diego Echeverria in attendance. Using Echeverria’s 1984 documentary Los Sures as a starting point, Southside-based UnionDocs has created Living Los Sures, a massive mixed-media project that defies easy categorization.

Frederick Wiseman: Law and Order (1969)

Director Frederick Wiseman in conversation with Kent Jones. Presented on 16mm. Part of NYFF closeding Acts presented byThe Film Society of Lincoln Center. Law & Order surveys the wide range of work the police are asked to perform: enforcing the law, maintaining order, and providing general social services.

What You Get Is What You See: The Tabloid

With writer Luc Sante. Showing his personal archives of images from tabloids and other materials, and beginning with memories from his childhood in the 60’s, Luc Sante will share his own perception of this culture.

Living Los Sures Shorts on the Lawn – Outdoor Screening/Picnic

A collection of short documentaries from Living Los Sures, the expansive documentary project about the Southside of Willamsburg. An audio walk around the Southside of Williamsburg. An immersive audio journey into Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York featuring the residents of Williamsburg’s Southside Community.

With an introduction from Marco Antonini (NURTUREart). An international survey of artworks sharing an interest in the politics and poetic potential of contemporary urban environments and exposing the irresistible pull of the similarities—intercultural meeting points, common problems, goals and dreams—around which people converge.

Sweet Work. Shorts on Labor at the Domino Brooklyn Refinery

Post-screening discussion with filmmakers moderated by Filip Noterdaeme. On the cusp of the Domino Sugar Brooklyn Refinery’s demolition, UnionDocs presents a program of mostly unseen work that examines the effect the refinery had on the surrounding neighborhood as well as addressing broader themes of sweetness and power.

An Evening with Jem Cohen

With artist Jem Cohen and UnionDocs' Programmer Steve Holmgren. This evening will feature a wide-ranging selection of works, works-in-progress, and excerpts, which Cohen has stubbornly evaded identifying in detail.

I Dream of Wires: The Ultimate Modular Synthesizer Documentary

Introduced by Synthhumpers with Director Robert Fantinatto and Producer Jason Amm & Oliver Chesler in attendance. An independent documentary about the history, demise and resurgence of the modular synthesizer, featuring interviews with over 100 modular musicians, inventors and enthusiasts.

Liveness and Cinema: An Illustrated Lecture

A presentation by filmmaker Sam Green. In this wide-ranging talk, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sam Green will explore a history of the commingling of performance and cinema — with many fascinating detours along the way.

With filmmakers Stanzi Vaubel and Damon Logan in attendance. THIS PLACE weaves together an ensemble, who bridge the worlds of filmmaker and subject. The film encapsulates the dynamism of experiences that originates at UnionDocs as a place.

Shorts After the Flaherty

With Karen Mirza, Brad Butler, Johan Grimonprez, Gibbs Chapman, Sean Hanley, Gabriela Monroy, and Caspar Stracke. An evening of film and video featuring some of the presenting artists from the 60th annual Robert Flaherty Film Seminar as well as some additional artists who attended the Seminar.

Transexual Menace

With Karl McCool, Justin Vivian Bond, and Chris E. Vargas (MOTHA). Transexual Menace gives viewers remarkable insight into the home and work lives of transsexuals from many cultures and countries, including female­-to­male transsexuals and those with families and children.

Seventeen

With Matt Wolf (Teenage) and Clinton Krute (BOMB Magazine). A film about coming of age in the working class, following a group of teenagers — girls and boys, white and black — whose lives intertwine during their last year in high school.

Ne Me Quitte Pas

Presented by the Dutch Consulate with Eric Kohn (Indiewire). A tragicomic ode to failure: set in a village on the edge of Belgium, Bob (Flemish) and Marcel (Walloon) share their solitude, sense of humor and carving for alcohol.
